EAP102 aims to develop abilities in reading, writing,
speaking and listening in an academic context. Additionally, this module
focuses on further helping students to improve proficiency in English language
and communication. For the better understanding and learning, different strategies,
attention grabbing ideas and activities plays a vital role in teaching and
learning. As we navigate through our academic journey, it’s crucial
not only to absorb knowledge but also actively engage with it. There should be
a collaboration of tutor and students for enhancement of learning atmosphere
and development of skills. Specifically in our classroom, we are having a fun
time and learning better by engaging into interesting activities that is as a
game, group discussion and volunteer basis. This kind of activities led to
interactive teaching and engrossing learning environment which also foster the attention
of students and interest in EAP102 module. Hence I will be talking about the
academic experience and teaching-learning method that is using in our class.
Firstly, as soon as we begin our class, our English lecturer
has come up with interesting activity called “Animal Hunt.” In this game students
are supposed to seat in the circle where everyone can see the friend’s face and
their presence. Then tutor instructed us to draw any animal that we like or any
animal that comes into our mind. Immediately, everyone started to draw the
picture and I did simple drawing of a lion. In this game one person have to
scan for the mentioned animal and move towards the student who drew that
mentioned animal within 10 seconds. Interestingly, the student with that
drawing has to call out the name of another animal before he or she is touched
by that person and to make the person move here and there. Thus, from this game
we came to understand that we have to be attentive and concentrated in the
class.
The next activity that we enjoyed was the Vocabulary game.
In this game, as same as in the previous activity, we have to be in a circle.
One has to rest the palm on the other person’s palm. Our tutor started the game
by asking question to tell any academic vocabulary that we know. It went on
round and round within the circle. Another interesting thing is, we have the
opportunity to change the question if we are out of academic vocabulary or others. It can
be asked either to spell the word or tell any general vocabulary.
Eventually, these kind of activities is helpful for us to
learn and build up our confidence. As I am going to be the future teacher, I can able to take this kind of interesting activities for my
students. It can be a brain-break activity as well as teaching-learning
strategy for enhancement of classroom atmosphere and students attention
grabbing method. At the end of the class, our tutor always do a meta moment session
for few minutes to know how much the learners learned about the particular
topic. I find this very important and reflective because when tutor ask and let student
to share their understanding, it help both the tutor and students to recapitulate
and reflect back on what we learn in the class. Group works and group discussion
during the class let the student to engage and participate. Through group
activities, everyone is given an equal opportunity to share the insights,
understanding and enhances critical thinking. Therefore I am also going to use
this strategy in my class in the future.
